DTF Transfer Pressing Instructions
Follow these simple steps to achieve a professional finish when applying your SmartSignz DTF transfers. Correct temperature, pressure and pressing time will help you achieve the best possible results.
1. Prepare Your Garment
No pre-pressing is usually required.
Our DTF transfers can generally be applied without pre-ironing or pre-pressing your garment first. However, if you prefer to remove any moisture or creases, you can pre-press the garment before applying your design.
Pro Tip: When working with a new fabric or material, we recommend testing a single item first. Different fabrics may respond differently to heat and pressure, so testing helps you find the best settings before proceeding with a full order.
2. Position Your Design
Place your DTF transfer onto the garment in your chosen position, ensuring the film lies flat against the surface.
Transfers can also be applied across certain seams and curved areas, including six-panel caps and T-shirt side seams, depending on your equipment and the garment.
For curved surfaces, caps or when using a household iron, heat-resistant tape can help hold the transfer securely in place and prevent unwanted movement during pressing.
3. Press and Peel
For a starting point, we recommend the following settings:
-
Temperature: 155°C / 310°F
-
Pressing time: Approximately 12 seconds
-
Pressure: Medium to firm
Always test your settings on one item before proceeding with a larger batch. If using a household iron, cover the transfer with baking parchment to protect the garment and prevent direct contact with the iron.
Once pressing is complete, allow the transfer to cool for a few seconds before carefully peeling away the film.
If the design hasn't transferred completely:
If any part of the design remains attached to the film, carefully lay it back down and press again. Apply additional pressure and increase the temperature in small increments of approximately 5–8°C until the transfer releases correctly.
If the garment is scorching or showing signs of heat damage:
Reduce the pressure first. If the problem continues, maintain the lower pressure and reduce the temperature gradually. Always consider the fabric manufacturer's heat recommendations when adjusting your settings.
Remember that different garments and materials may require slightly different settings. A little testing will help you achieve consistent results.
4. Final Press and Washing Instructions
Don't skip the final press!
Once you have peeled away the transfer film, cover the design with baking parchment or a suitable protective pressing sheet and press for a further 10–15 seconds, provided the garment and transfer specifications allow it.
This additional press helps improve the finish of your design, enhancing its durability and softness while reducing unwanted surface shine.
Washing and Care
To help keep your transferred design looking its best:
-
Allow the garment to cool completely before handling or washing.
-
Turn the garment inside out before washing.
-
Wash according to the garment's care label, using a gentle cycle where possible.
-
Avoid harsh bleach and abrasive cleaning products.
-
Avoid ironing directly over the transferred design.
For the best results, always follow the recommended application settings for your particular transfer and fabric. We recommend testing a sample garment before production, especially when working with unfamiliar materials.
